ILLUSTRIOUS SONS AND DAUGHTERS OF ILOBU, (VOLUME TWO) 25TH EDITION
He
grew up as a young lad with the ambition to make it big in life. He was
always bubbling with life, he was fearless, articulate, well travelled
and well trained in the defence of our territorial borders. He was a
military officer who had an all round training. He was a no nonsense
person, a disciplinarian with high level of integrity.
He was also loaded with sound education; with certificates in Military
Training, Public Administration and Accounting. He was no doubt an asset
to the nation and Ilobu community in particular.
Major Nicholas Adegboyega Osuntokun was born on the 23rd of March, 1945. He was from Oluawo’s Compound in Ilobu. He had his primary education in Ipetumodu, and to be specific at St Augustine Catholic Primary School, where he graduated with a Primary School Leaving Certificate in 1961; he also attended St Pious Secondary Modern School, Ipetumodu between 1962 and 1964 and bagged a Modern III Certificate. He enlisted with the Nigerian Army in December 6, 1966 and was commissioned in 1974. After his commissioning, he served the Nigerian Army meritoriously at various duty posts across the length and breadth of Nigeria in different capacities; Jungle Warfare, Combat Survival, Mountain Warfare, Artillery Management, Robbery and Firearm etc.
As a soldier, his military exposure extended beyond the command via the use of gun. He had passion for sound and qualitative education and thus attended so many in-service courses within and outside the country. He had been to Rome, Spain, France, Portugal and Benin Republic for military training. He didn’t stop at that; he got himself equipped with western education as well. He had Diploma in Public Administration from the Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin in 1989. He was also a member of the Association of Cost and Executive Accountant of Nigeria. He won the following military Medals and Awards before his retirement: National Service Medal, Public Service Medal, General Service Medal, Defence Service Medal, Silver Jubilee Medal and MSS MIL SVC Star Award. He rose to the rank of a Major in the Nigerian Army before his retirement.
After his retirement, he relocated to Ilobu for community service, having served the nation with all that God had bestowed on him. At home, he assisted the community in handling many tactical matters and stood very strong like the wall of Gilbrata in the defence of his community. He felt like offering himself for a higher service and thus vied for the position of the Chairmanship of Irepodun Local Government under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party. He had a brighter chance then until there was a political discord amongst members of Alliance for Democracy on who was to be picked as the Party’s flag bearer. The AD party members decamped in multitude and joined the PDP. The battle for the Chairmanship position was then refreshed and Major N. A. Osuntokun lost the party’s ticket to Hon. Gasaliyu Babatunde Abesin; a decampee to PDP, who eventually won the Local government election and became the Executive Chairman, Irepodun Local Government.
He did all he could as the Nigerian Army recruitment officer in Osun to facilitate enlistment of youths from Ilobu, Ifon-Osun and Erin-Osun into the Nigerian Army. He also used his connections to ensure admission into higher institution of learning for many young natives struggling to secure admission. He was a gem of inestimable value!
In recognition of Major N. A. Osuntokun contribution to the growth of his community and the Local Government at large, he was appointed as the Osun State Youth Empowerment (OYES) Commandant in Irepodun Local Government by the Argbesola led administration in the state of Osun in 2011. He also became the Vice Chairman/Commandant of the Nigeria Legion in Osun state. Unfortunately, man’s only silencer; death, caught up with this very active, strong and loyal son of Ilobu Asake, on the 5th day of March, 2015. What a life! Born in March and died in March, just 18days to his 70th birthday. May his soul continue to rest peacefully in the bosom of the Lord.
I therefore with a deep sense of humility present Major Nicholas Adegboyega Osuntokun post humously to the whole world for recognition and appreciation for his loyalty, commitment to community growth and service to humanity as an Illustrious son of Ilobu Asake.
