ILLUSTRIOUS SONS AND DAUGHTERS OF ILOBU, (VOLUME TWO) 21ST EDITION

His life was a typical example of a life lived with utmost simplicity, honesty and hard work. He was a transporter, business man and very social. He was known for wearing a lovely smile all the times. The personality being x-rayed was stoutly built with commanding steps that worked out things. He was a good manager of man and resources, with unequalled knack for success and human welfare.

Late Chief Lawrence Kolawole Adigun Labasa (Labasa Ogun) was born on the 19th day of December, 1947 to the Late Pa Daniel Ajisefini Adigun Labasa and Ceceilia Ayoka Adigun Labasa of Oyadele’s Compound in Ilobu. He had it rough and tough but managed to sail through primary and modern school in Ilobu before making up his mind to learn transportation business owing to paucity of fund. He had his training as a driver under the tutelage of one “Alagba Shittu” of Ologele’s Compound in Ilobu.

In 1967, having mastered the art of driving, subject to his boss confirmation and certification, he moved ahead in quest for a greener pasture and settled down at Ikirun. At Ikirun, he was privileged to work with a man called “Labaika”. His schedule of work was to covey passengers and goods from Ikirun to the northern part of the country. He carried out his task on daily basis with determination and unquenchable zeal to make it in life and thus adopting a simple style of living. He distinguished himself amongst his peers as a well comported and quiet driver but fearless. He detests exploitation and would fight for it with the last pint of his blood.

He worked at Ikirun as a driver for seven solid years and in 1974, he deemed it right to say goodbye to Ikirun and relocated to his home town; Ilobu to serve his people better and stay close to his family. He was still very active in the transport business but further added another business which actually broadcast his popularity beyond the “drivers’ circle” and made him a household name in Ilobu. . He went into music promotion, sales and recording of music. His studio made the heart of Ilobu town (Garage) a place to be by both old and young, especially as a recreational point in the evening. People usually ensured that they do not miss the selective oldies played by his recording studio.

In fact, his contribution was very much appreciated by the community that the Olobu in council bestowed on him the Aare Amuludun of Ilobu Land in 1994.

Furthermore, this did not interfere with his transport business. He was a force to reckon with among the members of the Nigerian Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW). He had been elected has the NURTW Chairman in Irepodun Local Government in 1990 in recognition of his outstanding investment into the union. He was also the state Auditor of NURTW and a Federal Marshall. All these honours showcased him as a formidable, dependable and committed leader of the Nigerian Union of Road Transport workers.

How I wish death never exist! How I wish Chief Lawrence Kolawole Adigun Labasa (Labasa Ogun) could stay behind and continue to be a blessing to his immediate family, his church members, his colleagues in the transport business, those who wiped their sorrow with selective oldies from his music box, those who stay glued to him for his leadership responsibilities and humanity in general!

Alas, the cold and destructive hands of death caught up with him on the 6th day of February, 2007 and “Labasa Ogun” slept peacefully in the bossom of the Lord. “Erin wo, Ajanaku sun fonfon, Oko Elizabeth, Baba Foluke re iwale asa”.

Therefore, in recognition of his immeasurable contributions to the economic growth and the social life of Ilobu community, I therefore with all sense of humility present Chief Lawrence Kolawole Adigun Labasa (Labasa Ogun) posthumously to the whole world for recognition and appreciation as an Illustrious son of Ilobu Asake.

Dare Alabi,
Project Director.
