ILLUSTRIOUS SONS AND DAUGHTERS OF ILOBU, (VOLUME TWO) 19TH EDITION

Destiny is a perfect craft of the one who controls the world activities. His decisions are unquestionable and sometimes obscured. My viewfinder closed up with a personality whose determination to make it in life has taken him in and out of so many things; education, football and politics. He has always offered his very best wherever he finds himself. His quiet and humble nature is another outstanding quality that has continuously portrayed him as a gem of inestimable value.

Mr. Mustapha Adedigba Abbis was born on June 12, 1962 to the family of the Late Alhaji Lasisi Alabi Agboola Adegoke and Madam Sifawu Adedigba Adegoke of Lanloko’s Compound, Ilobu. He was born and partly brought up in Ghana. His father was in love with Arabic education and thus wanted his son to be well grounded in the study of Arabic. In fulfillment of his wish, Mr Mustapha Adedigba Abbis and Alhaji Murthada Agboola were brought home from Ghana to live with and study Arabic education under the care of Baba Imam Bello of Ibigbami’s Compound, Ilobu.

Some years later, he decided that he needed to pursue his inner urge for western education and the only option that he was left with was to go back to Ghana and off he went. In Ghana, he attended Kwegyir Agreey Primary School and Kwegyir Agreey Middle School. In 1969, Dr Kofia Busia, the then Prime Minister of Ghana issued Allien Quit Order, indicating that all foreigners should leave and he had to relocate to Nigeria. At Ilobu, he could not continue his education, so in 1970, he travelled to Lagos which afforded him the opportunity to attend Western College of Commerce, Yaba and he later completed his secondary education at the National College, Bariga, Lagos. He attended various Diploma Courses on Marketing and Business Management and sealed it up with a National Diploma from the Ogun State Polytechnic, Abeokuta.

All these years while growing up, he had developed a great interest and skills in playing football. He was then privileged to start his footballing career with the Lagos State Transport Corporation (LSTC) Football Team, from where he moved to Works Ranger, Ibadan, a team of the Oyo State Ministry of Works. When Ogun State was created, he quickly moved to Abeokuta and played for “Ogun Rocket”, a team that was sponsored by the Ogun State Government. He later joined the Leventist Football Club, Lagos (The Iddo Tigers). It was as a player of the the Iddo Tigers that he got a call to the National team in preparation for the 1980 Cup of Nations. Unfortunately, he sustained a groin injury while playing for his club, the Iddo Tigers against African Continental Bank (ACB). Thus, he could not honour the invitation to the Super Eagles Camp and that was the saddest moment of his fotballing career, an end to a promising career. He was subsequently deployed to the office, where he flourished working as a clerical officer with A.G. Leventist.

His political career dated back to the eighties. He was a foundation member of the National Republican Convention, Irepodun Local Government Chapter. He later became the Chairman of NRC, Ife South Chapter, a position he later relinquished to become the NRC House of Representative Candidate in November 4, 1992 election.

When the People’s Democratic Party was formed, he was a foundation member and when the party rescued power from the Alliance for Democracy in Osun state, he was appointed as a member of the Governing Council of the Osun state College of Technology, Esa-Oke. As a member of the Governing Council, he did assisted many Ilobu sons and daughters who are now doing beautifully well in their chosen career to secure admissions into the college. It is also on record that he assisted some natives to secure employment with the Osun State College of Technology, Esa-Oke. He is presently a member of the Labour Party in the State of Osun. Worth noting is that he contested the last Osun State House of Assembly seat in Irepodun/Orolu Constituent Assembly election and lost. He is proudly the Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party in the State of Osun.

Therefore for his outstanding efforts to become someone against all odds and his contribution to the growth of natives and Ilobu community, I therefore with every sense of respect and humility present Mr Mustapha Adedigba Abbis to the public for celebration and appreciation as an illustrious son of Ilobu Asake.

Dare Alabi,
Project Director.
