ILLUSTRIOUS SONS AND DAUGHTERS OF ILOBU, (VOLUME TWO) 10TH EDITION

In this edition, my searchlight is beamed on a man who is quiet but not timid, calm but highly intelligent, cool headed and highly indefatigable. He is wonderfully endowed with that natural ability to get things perfectly done to the admiration of the people.

Alhaji Kareem Olasunkanmi Ajayi was born on March 1, 1948 to the family of the late Pa Afolabi Ajayi of Gbobamu’s Compound, Ilobu. He attended St Mary’s Catholic School, Yekemi, Ile-Ife, A.U.D Modern School, Erin-Osun and Islamic High School, Ibadan where he obtained his Secondary School Certificate in 1967. Between 1968 and 1970, he attended the Provincial Teachers’ College, Osogbo for his Grade II Certificate. He crowned his search for a western education by proceeding to the University of Ife, Ile-Ife, where he bagged a B.A.ED in History.

His training as a teacher took him in and out of many citadels of learning. He taught at Gombe Teachers’ College, Gombe, Divisional Teachers’ College, Ikirun, Akinorun Grammar School, Ikirun, IMA High School, Ilobu, Ansarudeen Grammar School, Erin-Osun, Baptist Grammar School, Ola-Ejigbo and Muslim Commercial High School, Ola-Ejigbo. He rendered selfless service to grow education at all the schools that he had served either as a classroom teacher or as a Principal in control of school’s administration.

His vibrancy, versatility and articulation were noticed in his days as a student; he served as the President of the then Irepodun Local Government Students’ Association between 1979 and 1980. In his bid to serve humanity, he invested his God given wisdom, fund and energy into the service of Ilobu Development Union. In 1999, he became the Financial Secretary of IDU and served the Union meritoriously until 2006. He was also the Chairman of IDU Ilobu History Writing Committee between 2010 and 2012, he was the Chairman IDU Education Committee between 2006 and 2012. He is a strong member of the Board of Governors of Ilobu High School.

Alhaji Kareem Olasunkanmi Ajayi is a man whose benevolence is enjoyed at every facets of human endeavours. He is the Chairman, IMA High School Cooperative Society, President, Al-halaal Welfare Fund and the President, Alurin Alumni Association. Thus, he is very active at religious engagements; lighting peoples’ path to eternal glory.

As a professional teacher, he is not a push-over. He was an active member of the Egbe Akomolede ati Asa Yoruba in Nigeria. He served as the Financial Secretary of the Egbe Akomlode ati Asa, Osun State Chapter. He also served as the Secretary of the All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS), Ejigbo Local Government Area; he was fondly called ‘Shiekh’ in the ANCOPSS’ family because of his perfect understanding of the teachings and practices of Islam spelt out in the Holy Quran. After his retirement in September 30, 2006, having put in the mandatory 35 years into the Public Service, he joined the Nigerian Union of Pensioners and was saddled with the responsibility of handling the Secretariat of the Union(Secretary) in Irepodun Local Government Area between 2011 and 2014.
Alhaji Kareem Olasunkanmi Ajayi is a typical example of what leadership is all about. He is blessed with the charisma to work things out when hopes aren’t visible. His life is a beautiful exemplification how best to achieve greatness without making a noise. He is indeed a model to many people and a complete gentleman in all ramifications.

Therefore, considering his immeasurable service to humanity and Ilobu community in particular; as a teacher/school administrator, as a foremost Islamic scholar and as a community leader, I humbly present Alhaji Kareem Olasunkanmi Ajayi to the whole world for appreciation and recognition as an illustrious son of Ilobu Asake.

Dare Alabi,
Project Director.
